UPDATED: President Obama Nominates Merrick Garland To Supreme Court
UPDATE: Wednesday, March 16, 2016 10:50 a.m.
NBC News has confirmed that President Obama will nominate federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.
The 63-year-old is the chief judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
He was previously considered for the Supreme Court in 2010.
President Barack Obama will announce his nominee for U.S. Supreme Court, a vacancy he vowed to fill after the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia in February.
Obama will make his announcement at 11 a.m. ET, according to a White House statement
“I’ve made my decision: Today, I will announce the person I believe is eminently qualified to sit on the Supreme Court,” Obama wrote.
Last week, Sri Srinivasan, Merrick Garland, and Paul Watford — who, if confirmed, would be the nation’s third Black justice after Clarence Thomas and Thurgood Marshall — were named by a source close to the process as potential nominees.
