Fulton County is preparing its roads for winter weather, coordinating with Atlanta and Georgia
Fulton County is ready to bring out the salt and the sand.
The county has 800 tons of sand and 25 tons of calcium chloride — road salt — that it will begin applying to roads Friday afternoon.
Fulton is responsible only for roads in the unincorporated south part of the county. Jessica Corbitt, a spokesperson for the county, said road treatment will begin in the early afternoon on bridges and major roadways.
“We don’t want to do it too early,” she said. “We don’t want people to drive all over it and it to all go away.”
The county will also make sure roads to the county jail, the medical examiner’s office, fire stations, fueling centers and other important county buildings are clear. The county airport has sand and salt available to keep it open.
Transportation workers will work 12-hour shifts, with an overnight shift beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.
The county is coordinating with Atlanta, the state and county courts to determine possible closures.
Fulton County schools are still on their winter break, but the county is coordinating with the Atlanta Public Schools, as well.
“We’re sharing information to make sure we’re aware of the decisions that are made,” Corbitt said.
