US Chamber unveils pro-Handel ad: ‘She’s one of us’
It was only a matter of time: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Monday unleashed the first in a wave of advertisements for Republican Karen Handel ahead of her June 20 runoff against Democrat Jon Ossoff.
The ad declares that “Hollywood liberals” are behind Ossoff’s campaign and compares him to Nancy Pelosi and Bernie Sanders. It ends with the words: “Karen Handel: She’s one of us.”
The conservative group said it is spending at least $1 million on the ad campaign, which is reminiscent of another spot aired by one of Handel’s vanquished GOP rivals. U.S. Sen. David Perdue was featured in an ad in late March on behalf of Dan Moody, whom he also said was “one of us.”
Ossoff spokeswoman Sacha Haworth called the Chamber “just another faceless super PAC doing Karen Handel’s dirty work spreading lies about Jon Ossoff to make up for the fact that she is way out-of-touch with the district.”
Chamber political director Rob Engstrom called Ossoff a hypocrite, and said the candidate sought the organization’s endorsement earlier this year.
The Chamber formally endorsed Handel last week in a press conference in Alpharetta, a move that seems destined to lead to a new media barrage supporting her bid to represent the suburban Atlanta district in Congress.
The move was no surprise – Handel once led the chamber’s north Fulton offshoot – but it was more evidence that she consolidated GOP support after vicious Republican infighting in last month’s vote.
The 6th District race is shaping up to be the most expensive House race ever. Outside groups and the two parties are pouring money and resources into the suburban Atlanta district, which is seen nationally as a litmus test for Trump’s support.
