Piedmont Road closed for I-85 repairs

Construction workers have shut down Piedmont Road to start the next phase of repairs at the site of the Interstate 85 bridge collapse. Contractors will be working to set new beams for the road project.

Area businesses said they are split on how they feel about another closure.

“We will definitely be impacted,” European Auto Care of Atlanta employee Eli Itow said. “Traffic will be slow, so it will make it hard for people to pick up their cars.”

Down the road just yards away from the collapse, the owner of Buckhead Plating Incorporated agreed with Itow saying the shutdown is less than ideal.

“We usually have 20-30 customers, but lately we’ve had anywhere from 2-8,” Mark Shearan said. “I just wish people would stop saying Piedmont Road is closed. Yes, it’s closed, but it’s not closed where my business is.”

But in the same area, the manager of Gino’s New York Pizza Bar disagreed with Shearan and Itow.

“If anything business has picked up since the collapse,” Amy Gerritz said. “New customers stuck in traffic stop in all the time.”

As for detours, the Buford Spring Connector will be open to traffic, but the southbound access ramp from Piedmont Road will be closed.
