A storm system is moving into metro Atlanta that could turn severe Thursday, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“Isolated spots could get 40 to 60 mph winds and a lot of lightning,” Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said.

Even hail up to 1 inch in diameter is possible in some cases.

Strong storms moving at about 45 mph, however, remained in far North Georgia early Thursday, Minton said.

Parts of metro Atlanta, including south Fulton and northeast Cobb counties, only picked up light showers.

Pockets of more severe weather could develop about 9 a.m., Minton said.

The greater chance for severe weather is this afternoon for areas south of I-20 and southeast of I-285.

The storms, however, are not expected to last long. They should start to taper off by 2 p.m., Minton said.

Atlanta’s expected high is 79 degrees, down from Wednesday’s high of 80.

Currently, the temperature is 65 in Atlanta.
