Gwinnett Co. police officer resigns amid disturbing allegations
A Gwinnett County police officer turned in his badge Monday amid shocking allegations.
Zachary Wilkerson, 35, was arrested over the weekend following a domestic dispute with his estranged wife and at least two other people during a gathering at a Stone Mountain residence Saturday night.
“This type of behavior and these allegations are very disturbing,” said Corporal Deon Washington.
According to police, Wilkerson was hired June 22, 2015 and started operating as an officer on the street April 23, 2016.
“During the dispute he took her cell phone and attempted to leave with it without her permission and when she tried to retrieve her property he grabbed her by the neck and pushed her on the ground,” Washington said. “And then he began yelling obscenities at her when other individuals who were at the party tried to intervene, to calm the situation he pulled out a gun.”
According to police, about six hours later, around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, one of Mrs. Wilkerson’s friend’s concerned for her safety asked police to perform a welfare check at the couple’s Lilburn home.
“He left the scene and loaded a sexually explicit video of his estranged wife onto Facebook. That information was seen by one of her best friends. He also began sending text messages on his wife’s phone to one of her best friends. Those messages were disturbing in nature and prompted her to contact police. ”
Police learned of the dispute after locating Wilkerson’s estranged wife at a friend’s home. Wilkerson was arrested on misdemeanor charges. He faces several charges including simple assault, battery and theft by taking and is free on bond tonight.
