Community rallies around local store after thieves break-in

Thieves were hoping to get some quick cash by breaking into a neighborhood grocery store. Now the neighborhood is doing what they can to support the store.

The manager of the L and M Market on Argonne Avenue in Midtown Atlanta said surveillance video shows a van crashing through the front doors of the store. Cory Cochran said three guys jumped out with their faces covered and went straight for the ATM. It didn’t take long for them to realize the ATM was attached to the floor, so they jumped behind the counter for the next best thing.

“They grabbed the cash register, which was 25 years old, and it only had $6.20 in change in it,” said Cochran.

They got away with less than $10, but did thousands of dollars in damage when they broke through the doors with the van. Neighbors turned to social media and encouraged each other to make a special point of shopping at the grocery store.

Laura Demars had planned to run by a larger grocery store on her way home from work, and then she read what had happened.

“I saw on the Nextdoor App and knew I had to shop at my corner store, I go there often for the people and the convenience,” said Demars.

Ian Ragsdale stopped in too after seeing the door smashed in.

“You hate to see it happen in your own neighborhood, such nice people, always friendly and looking out and great to have in the neighborhood,” said Ragsdale.
