Black-Owned Firm Will Manage Multimillion-Dollar Construction Projects for Texas A&M
For the third time in five years, an African American-owned project management consulting firm has landed a major deal with Texas A&M University.

The contract awarded this month to Houston-based Taylor Construction Management (TCM) means the firm will manage the development of capital improvement work across the university’s 11 campuses in Texas. TCM will supervise more than 1 million square feet of new and renovated real estate with total construction costs of $500 million.

The project is a significant one for TCM as it will contribute more than $1.5 million to the firm’s revenues this year and increase its portfolio of work for educational clients from $1.5 billion to $2 billion based on the construction costs of work managed.

Headed by a Husband-and-Wife Business Team
Taylor Construction, owned by the husband-and-wife team of Troi and Kelley Taylor, manages prime projects for property owners. Its role includes overseeing the design-build, hiring the construction company and workers, managing those contracts and ensuring project costs do not exceed the budget.
The new Texas A&M project calls for TCM to manage the construction of projects that include a new agricultural research building, a nursing school, and a dentistry school. The business also will oversee the construction of four multipurpose buildings at Tarleton State University, a Texas A&M campus in Fort Worth. TCM has handled projects ranging from football stadiums to student apartment complexes for Texas A&M since 2012.

The company was started by the Taylors six years ago. The couple told Black Enterprise this year that they decided to pursue construction management because there were very few minority-owned project management firms in Texas with the capacity to handle big projects.
“Elevated Level of Service”
Russ Wallace, executive director of Facilities Planning & Construction at Texas A&M, stated Taylor Construction Management has been an invaluable asset as they continue to provide project management services in College Station, Stephenville, and various locations in North Texas.

Other projects TCM has managed include a $1 billion terminal redevelopment project at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, a $28 million biotech facility outside of Shanghai in China. The firm’s educational portfolio includes managing $450 million of a nearly $2 billion bond program for the Houston Independent School District.
The Texas A&M contract and multiple life science projects in China helped boost the firm’s 2017 revenues. Co-founding partner Troi Taylor says revenues this year grew more than 50% gain over last year, but actual dollar figures were not disclosed.
He expects the company’s revenues to double in 2018, based on contracts it has already signed this year. “We want to keep our project portfolio diverse across multiple industries to cover international and domestic markets,” Troi says.
