Watch Mike Pence swear in Tom Price as health secretary

WASHINGTON – Less than 12 hours after he was confirmed by the Senate, Georgia U.S. Rep. Tom Price was installed as the 23rd secretary of health and human services.

Vice President Mike Pence administered the oath of office in a brief ceremony in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building late Friday morning.

Pence, a pal of Price’s from their days together in the House, said Price “is uniquely qualified to step into this leading role during this time of reform in the life of health care in America.”

President Donald Trump and I are “both confident that you will bring that experience as a physician, that experience at the state level and that singular experience at the national level to ensure that President Trump’s vision for a health care system in this country that works for every American will become a reality in the years ahead,” Pence told Price.

Betty Price, a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, held the Bible as her husband took the oath of office. Price himself did not deliver a speech after signing paperwork to make it all official.

Meanwhile, Gov. Nathan Deal scheduled a special election to fill Price’s 6th District congressional seat on April 18 and a runoff – all but guaranteed – for June 20. Qualifying begins on Monday.
