Pilot identified in fatal Cherokee County plane crash

Friends and family are mourning the loss of a pilot killed in a crash in Cherokee County early Saturday morning.

Deputies said 69-year-old Steven Silver, of Woodstock, was killed when his plane crashed at West Hangar Driver near the Cherokee County Airport. Silver was the sole passenger on the plane, and was pronounce dead at the scene, fire officials said.

According to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, the twin engine Cessna 421 plane hit a power line, breaking a nearby pole, and crashed inside a fenced area in a bank near a retention police. The plane caught fire, but was quickly extinguished, fire officials said.

Utility crews were called in to remove a broken power line that landed onto a metal fence.

The National Transportation Safety Board is handling the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
