Organizations call for Sheriff Mann's resignation

Several metro Atlanta groups are calling for the resignation of DeKalb County Sheriff Jeff Mann in the wake of his arrest on charges of indecency and obstruction of justice.

According to the police report, Mann allegedly fled from an officer who discovered him exposing himself in an area of Atlanta’s Piedmont Park “known for sexual activity after dark” last week. Mann surrendered after a brief foot chase and was booked into the Atlanta City Jail.

In a letter sent to Governor Nathan Deal on Tuesday, Terry Deese, president of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, asked that Sheriff Mann be removed from his post and that the state’s attorney general investigate the charges against him.

“If this is true, his credibility is tarnished,” Deese said. “We have an issue w/him running from an officer & disobeying a lawful command.”

In his letter, Deese described the request as an “urgent matter.”

A Marietta-based human right organization seemingly agrees with his sentiments. Members of the New Order also delivered a letter to Governor Deal’s office Wednesday demanding that Sheriff Mann step down.

In a news release, the organization said “As a law enforcement officer he is held to higher esteem inmates that is currently incarcerated in his JAIL…Are punished when exposing themselves..Sheriff Mann has also arrested and terminated employees for the same similar conduct…He violated responsibilities citizens of Dekalb County !!!!”

Deal’s office is reportedly reviewing requests to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, Mann has issued a statement insisting he has no plans to resign.
