GEORGE TURNER, JR. Candidate for
District 4, City Council Seat – Stonecrest, DeKalb County, GA
I, George Turner, Jr., hereby serve notice that I am seeking election to City Council District 4, Stonecrest, DeKalb County, Georgia. I pledge to represent with Integrity, Transparency, and a sense of Urgency.
I have lived in the Stonecrest footprint for over 30 years. I am married with two adult children who attended public school in DeKalb County. I currently serve as President of DeKalb County District 5 Community Council, wherein we are responsible for helping to vet pending zoning requests and special land use request.
In DeKalb County, I have voluntarily worked with local officials to improve code enforcement. I am known for my voluntary service as I have had input on the following:
Introduction of East Metro Community Improvement District (CID)
Development of the Stonecrest Overlay District
Plan of GA DOT road improvement
Update of the zoning ordinances
Development of the Comprehensive land use plan
I helped to organize and lead both the Homeowners United and the South Lithonia Neighborhood Coalition to effectively challenge and stop several unacceptable developments in our community. We advocated for libraries, parks and recreational development in the south Lithonia area. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area which has developed over 30 miles of walking trails and preserved over 2000 acres of greenspace in the area.
Currently, I volunteer and interact with two youth groups: Smart Academy, at a local elementary school and Technology Association of Georgia, JUMPSTART, at a local high school.
My service with the Georgia General Assembly as a people’s advocate and legislative aide for 8 years has given me great insight into the operation of state and federal government, as well as, direct experience corresponding with constituents and addressing their concerns.
I am a retired Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority General Superintendent, with extensive leadership and management experience. Also, while at MARTA, we operated under very strict oversight and codes of conduct for which I built my reputation.
The City of Stonecrest will start up with the very 3 services for which I have been interacting with the community for the past 10-15 years. It would be a natural transition from volunteer to elected official to entrust me with the power and authority to elevate what we have already been doing in this community. Over the years, I have elected to serve the community, now I would like to be elected to serve the people of Stonecrest.
I stand prepared to present myself to the public and expound on my complete qualifications for, City Council District 4, Stonecrest, Georgia.
George Turner, Jr.
