Cobb County is the closest county to Atlanta which has decided to cancel classes because of icy roads. County officials admit some section of roadways are okay and passable, especially the further south ones in the county, but after consulting with law enforcement, rescue crews, and they Georgia Department of Transportation, they decided traveling to school would be too hazardous.

FOX 5’S Marissa Mitchell checked out some of the roadways Sunday night. EMC Parkway still had a sheet of ice right in the middle of street even two days after the ice came down.

The roads in front of McClure Middle School and Bullard Elementary Schools in Kennesaw were also show similar conditions with ice thick enough to skate on coating the streets. Sidewalks and crosswalks were just as bad for pedestrians as the streets were for drivers.

A lot of drivers were taking their time, trying to work their way around some of the icy patches, but several hilly location, the FOX 5 News crews found were still a struggle to climb and overcome.

“The fact is this is making it safer for family and friends to not have to worry about getting stuck on a bus or the bus getting stuck in a ditch or something like that even though some of the roads are dry there are still those occasional back roads that people live on and you can’t get to them so you don’t want to keep kids in harm’s way,” said Huston Parson, who was spotted helping drivers.

Many tried, but failed to get out and through the mess Sunday. FOX 5 News received several photos of flipped or crashed vehicles especially in Paulding and Cherokee Counties. One of those cars ended up on its side stuck in a frozen creek.
